Spirulina, a freshwater green blue algae belonging to the Cyanophyceae family, is one of the oldest microorganisms on Earth, dating back 3 billion years. Originally found in volcanic lakes of Central America and Africa, it was traditionally harvested by the Kanembu people near Lake Chad for sustenance. In Central America, the Aztecs recognized its nutritional value and health benefits. Spirulina’s scientific name, Arthrospira platensis or Spirulina platensis, refers to its origins in Chad, while Spirulina maxima is associated with Mexico, though Arthrospira platensis has also been discovered in Latin America, India, Asia, and other regions. Today, spirulina cultivation has made it widely accessible beyond its natural habitats.
Fight Fatigue
Spirulina is a nutrient-rich superfood that helps fight fatigue caused by stress, poor sleep, and unhealthy eating habits. Packed with enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements, it replenishes the body’s energy levels. Its components like phycocyanin, chlorophyll, and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) boost immunity and counteract free radicals.
Improve Athletic Performance
Athletes can benefit from spirulina as it enhances endurance, physical performance, and muscle recovery. It reduces cramps, muscle tears, and fatigue. Phycocyanin in spirulina prevents the build-up of lactic acid, which causes cramps and muscle tears. It also has anti-inflammatory properties. Glycogen in spirulina helps delay muscle fatigue.
Allergy Relief
Studies have shown promising results in using spirulina to alleviate allergic conditions such as asthma, atopic eczema, and allergic rhinitis. Spirulina boosts immune defenses, reduces histamine release, and inhibits the production of arachidonic acid, which triggers bronchospasm.
Antioxidant Power
Spirulina is packed with antioxidants like chlorophyll, beta carotene, phycocyanin, vitamin E, zinc, selenium, and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD). These antioxidants protect against oxidative stress, which is linked to various health problems.
Aid in Special Diets
Spirulina is recommended for certain diets like vegetarian, vegan, or weight loss plans to prevent nutrient deficiencies.
Nutritional Aspects
Spirulina offers an impressive range of characteristics that have attracted researchers, companies, and organizations. Its exceptional nutritional value includes:

Exceptionally high protein content (50-70% of its dry weight, almost twice as high as soya)
Provitamin A
Abundant provitamin A (beta-carotene) content (meets daily requirements for vitamin A)
Various Vitamins
Rich source of vitamin B12. Plus, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B8 and B9, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K
Iron
High in iron and minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, selenium, and iodine
Zinc
High in zinc content (when produced with added zinc in growth tanks)
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)
High GLA content which supports anti-inflammatory and immune functions
Amino Acids
Essential amino acids crucial for optimal growth and bodily functions
Various Pigments
Pigments with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antitumor properties

Therapeutic Properties
In addition to its nutritional benefits, spirulina is rich in therapeutic properties. It contains molecules that have been studied for their biological activities, with particular focus on its immunostimulant and antiviral properties. These properties are of great interest in addressing the weakened immune defenses associated with malnutrition.
Clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of spirulina in nutritional rehabilitation, particularly in malnourished HIV-positive patients. Spirulina supplementation has shown positive impacts on weight gain, immune activity, and viral load reduction. Its locally grown availability and micronutrient composition make it a valuable resource in fighting malnutrition and supporting the health of individuals living with HIV.
