FAQs

Why is Spirulina considered a superfood?

Spirulina earns its status as a superfood because of its impressive nutrient profile. This incredible algae is teeming with essential nutrients, making it a nutritional powerhouse. Our raw harvest product is meticulously cultivated to maintain its organic and bio qualities, preserving its abundant benefits without any post-harvest interference.

Where is your spirulina from?

Our spirulina is sourced directly from our own farm in Malaysia, ensuring its freshness and quality. We take pride in the fact that our raw spirulina is not imported, frozen, or subjected to long storage periods. It is cultivated locally and promptly delivered to preserve its optimal nutritional value.

How did you harvest your spirulina?

Every day, we harvest our spirulina from our aquatic farm in the early morning and promptly pack it into our glass jars within 24 hours. We take pride in keeping our spirulina untouched and unprocessed, without any manipulation or conversion into powder or tablets. This ensures that our spirulina retains its enzymatic activity and natural energy, just as nature intended. At Fresh Spirulina Farm, when we say raw, we mean it! Our spirulina remains truly raw in its natural state, unlike processed powders that are stored for long periods in warehouses or plastic packaging.

How does raw spirulina taste?

In its freshest form, raw spirulina is typically tasteless and odorless, unlike powdered or tablet forms that often have a strong flavor. Some individuals may perceive a mild earthy taste or slight bitterness when consuming raw spirulina. However, as time progresses, the spirulina may develop a more pronounced “sea-like” taste.

Why is your spirulina available as a paste instead of powder or tablets?

We offer our fresh Spirulina as a paste to preserve its live enzymes, essential for nutrient absorption. Unlike dried powder or tablet forms that undergo dehydration and may contain additives, our unprocessed paste retains its natural state, maximizing nutritional benefits.

Is your product halal?

Our Spirulina product is considered Halal by default, as it is not derived from animals. According to JAKIM, for food to be Halal, it must meet these requirements:

  • It must not stem from or consist of any part of or item from animals that are forbidden to Muslims by Islamic law, or animals that have not been slaughtered according to Islamic law.
  • It must not contain any substance that is considered impure in Islamic law.
  • It must not be prepared, processed, or manufactured using equipment or utensils that are not free from impurities as defined by Islamic law.
  • During the preparation, processing, or storage stages, it must not come into contact with or be stored near any kind of food that does not meet the requirements mentioned above or any substances that are considered impure by Islamic law.

As Muslims, we deeply care about what we eat and what we give to our children. It must be Halal. Rest assured, our product meets all the Halal criteria. Enjoy it with peace of mind!

Is spirulina safe for dialysis patients?

It is recommended to consult with your doctor regarding the safety of spirulina for dialysis patients, as individual responses may vary.

What are the precautions to take?

Unlike other blue-green algae, spirulina is not contaminated with toxins called microcystins. Check that the label bears the mention of “Spirulina” otherwise it is probably another species of cyanobacteria, for example Aphanizomenon flos-aquae which may be contaminated.

Are there any contraindications?

None at current doses. However, people with phenylketonuria should seek Doctor advices because like all protein foods, it contains phenylalanine.

What are the side effects?

In some people, various symptoms such as gastrointestinal upset and headache can occur, especially when the starting doses are too high. To avoid these symptoms related to the detoxifying properties of spirulina, start with 5 to 10 grams per day for a week and gradually increase the dose over the following weeks to ideally reach 15 to 20 grams per day.

Is spirulina safe to consume?

Spirulina, a plant-based superfood, is considered safe for consumption by both adults and children. However, it’s important to note that certain spirulina products may contain trace amounts of heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic, which can potentially lead to contamination or toxicity.

At Fresh Spirulina Farm, we prioritize the safety of our spirulina by implementing rigorous farming and harvesting practices, as well as adhering to strict hygiene and quality control procedures. We also conduct regular laboratory tests to analyze our spirulina batches for any contaminants. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, we recommend consulting your doctor or physician before incorporating spirulina into your diet.

Is spirulina suitable for children?

Certainly! Spirulina is safe for consumption by people of all ages, including children.

  • For fresh and frozen raw spirulina: It is recommended that children below the age of 12 consume a minimum of 5 grams per day, with an ideal daily intake of 10 grams. Adults, on the other hand, should aim to consume at least 10 grams per day, with an ideal daily intake ranging from 15 to 20 grams.
  • For dehydrated spirulina: Children below 12 should aim for a minimum of 1 gram per day and ideally 3 grams per day, while adults should consume at least 5 grams per day and ideally 10 grams per day.

It’s important to note that higher quantities can be consumed as spirulina is a natural food and not a chemical product.

How should Spirulina be consumed?

When it comes to spirulina consumption, it’s important to remember that it is a food, not a medicine. Therefore, consuming excessive amounts will simply leave you feeling full. Doctors and nutritionists generally suggest a daily intake of raw spirulina ranging from 5 to 40 grams as part of a balanced diet. Of course, larger serving sizes can be enjoyed to increase protein and nutrient intake.

Spirulina is incredibly versatile and can be incorporated into various culinary creations. It can be used as an ingredient in cooked dishes, as a spread or pesto, blended into smoothies, and even added to desserts and ice cream. For inspiring recipe ideas, we invite you to visit our recipes page.

However, it’s important to note that the timeframe for addressing other specific ailments may vary depending on the severity and nature of the condition.

How long does a jar of fresh raw spirulina last?

Our raw spirulina is harvested and bottled promptly, ensuring exceptional freshness. Each bottle is clearly labeled with an expiry date on the cap, providing you with the necessary information to enjoy it at its best.

How should I store the fresh raw spirulina?

To ensure optimal freshness, it is important to store spirulina between 2 and 4 degrees Celsius. However, it is advisable to avoid storing it in the fridge door compartment as it tends to be the warmest area of the refrigerator, particularly when the door is opened frequently.

Can I use Spirulina in cooking?

Certainly! Spirulina can be used in cooking. However, it’s important to note that like all vegetables, subjecting fresh spirulina to heat can diminish its bioavailability and nutrient content. For maximum nutritional benefits, we recommend adding fresh spirulina to your dishes just before serving, ensuring optimal nutrition is preserved.

Why is your fresh spirulina stored in a glass jar?

At Fresh Spirulina Farm, we prioritize quality and sustainability. That’s why we opt for glass jars as the packaging for our spirulina. Glass jars offer superior protection, keeping the spirulina fresh and uncontaminated. Moreover, by using glass jars instead of plastic or paper cartons, we contribute to environmental preservation by reducing the amount of waste ending up in landfills. We believe that a high-quality product deserves a high-quality package that aligns with our commitment to both product integrity and environmental consciousness.

Should I return the used glass jar to you?

At Fresh Spirulina Farm, we take responsibility for the glass jars we use and strive for maximum sustainability. We collect the glass jars from our customers and reuse them for as long as they remain in satisfactory condition. By participating in this process, you actively contribute to environmental conservation. Once the jars reach an unsatisfactory state, we return them to the glass factory where they are crushed and melted down to create new jars.

Before reuse, we ensure thorough cleaning of the jars to eliminate any residue or stains. To maintain hygiene standards, the jars undergo sterilization before being filled with fresh spirulina. We also conduct regular testing of spirulina batches to guarantee quality and adherence to our standards.
